Welcome to 5-10-15-20, where we talk to artists about the music they loved at five-year interval points in their lives. Maybe we'll get a detailed roadmap of how their tastes and passions helped make them who they are. Maybe we'll just learn that they really liked hearing the "Denver, The Last Dinosaur" theme song over and over when they were kids. Either way, it'll be fun.

This time, we spoke with Woods' Jarvis Taveniere, 31. Woods' new album At Echo Lake is out May 11 on Woodsist.

Mötley Crüe: Too Fast for Love

My cousin gave me this cassette. I don't think he was even that into it. He probably didn't even like it. I think it was the first piece of music I owned, so I just treasured it and listened to it a lot.

I remember I did an art project. The theme was "What do you want to be when you grow up?" I cut a picture of Vince Neil out of Hit Parader and glued my face over his face-- my eight-year-old face over Vince Neil-- so I must've really, really liked them.

I broke the album out again when I was in my early twenties, and I really liked the title track a lot. The whole record? A lot of phaser on the drums. Like, more than two songs. That and the cowbell might have been a little overused. But I think that was the charm of it being their first album.

Stryper: "To Hell With the Devil"

When I was 10, it gets worse. I was huge into hair metal. It was mainly what was on MTV, so it was all I really knew existed. I was like, "Oh, this is music. This is what it has to offer me."

I have no clue why I especially liked Stryper. It's one of those things. I had this neighbor who was older than me. Now, looking back, I realize he was mentally handicapped. He was really into hair metal, too, so I would go to his house and he would show me concert VHS videos of Stryper and W.A.S.P. and all these bands. But Stryper I really got into. I had a few of their albums.

They would throw Bibles into the crowd. I don't think I really had an opinion on [the band's outspoken Christianity]. That's what kind of boggles me; it was just this band I liked.

I really just liked whatever was on MTV-- like Poison, stuff like that. And then even the lesser stuff like Trickster, Warrant. I liked Slaughter. I was in the fan club, and I got a cassette promo of their second album before it came out. I was like, "Wow, man, I'm on the inside."

I think I lost interest in hair metal when Nirvana came out. But there was still that awkward middle period where I was still getting Ratt albums as well as Mudhoney. It's like trying to reset my head. It's like, "What's this change? What am I feeling?"

Sonic Youth: Evol

This was the phase where I was getting into music that I would still say is pretty good, and it was still all MTV. Going into record stores and seeing Nirvana's Bleach was almost like, "What the hell is this? What is this record?" I couldn't even comprehend what it was. Going in and seeing five Sonic Youth albums that I'd never heard of was just, like, "What?" I didn't even get it. So I just grabbed that one one day, and it was pretty intense.

I don't know if I bought it was because of the cover; I just knew I had to start somewhere. Maybe it was all they had at Tower Records. But I remember really having to sit with it and really wanting to understand it, and then slowly becoming so obsessed with that record. It's so dark and so minimal, especially since I was coming off listening to Dirty.

I had Goo and I had Dirty thanks to the Columbia House Record Club. I would check out all the bands that Nirvana said were cool because it was a penny an album. So I was like, "Oh, Goo! I'll get Goo." So I loved all that stuff, but it was when I got the early stuff, especially Evol. The cover's pretty violent, and the back cover picture is so weird-- like a weird shadow on Thurston's head. It makes it look like his face is pasted on, and that creeped me out. It was like, "Are these people even real?" I couldn't comprehend underground music.

The Rolling Stones: Flowers

Flowers is a U.S. compilation of singles and some B-sides, just a repackaging of all the UK releases. That one came out, I think, in the mid-60s. My cousin got married, and he gave me all his old LPs-- which were really just Rolling Stones records, so I got like 10. That's the one that I really clung to.

As I got into Sonic Youth, Sonic Youth would be like, "Check out Harry Pussy." And then the gates were open. So I rejected classic rock for a while, and then, mid-college, started to finally let my guard down. The Stones were the first band to get through. Even now, I'm just getting into the Beatles.

The music on Flowers is not totally innocent, but it's more poppy than they were about to get. And it wasn't like Satanic Majesties; it wasn't drug-pop yet. It was kind of bubblegummy, but it was also kind of gnarly. "Mother's Little Helper" has this huge distorted bass and an out-of-tune 12-string lead. All the songs are just great.

Can: Soundtracks

This album is all things they had done for soundtracks compiled. I first heard it on tour with an old band, Wooden Wand. James [Jackson Toth], who sang in that band, played it for me one day, and I'd never really heard Can. I knew of them, but I hadn't really got into it yet. And it was the music that I needed at the time. Every track that came on, every change in every song-- I was like, "Yes. This is where I'm at." I just loved hearing the musicians playing together so well. But everything's all over the place just in the way that I wanted. The players are just so good.

That was my first krautrock thing before getting into Neu! and then other things. That's also when I got into the Zombies and their LP Odessey and Oracle. That one was big for me around that time, too. It's just the catchiest album. You always notice new things about it. It's so well crafted. Immediately, you're like, "Oh these songs are great." And then slowly, you're like, "Whoa, that bassline there is amazing. Those backup harmonies, I never noticed that! Where'd that come from?"

Various Artists: Nigeria Rock Special

This is a compilation that Soundway Records put out-- all these Nigerian rock and psych-funk bands. I was reading the liner notes, and I guess the producer went to London and studied with George Martin at EMI when the Beatles were recording Abbey Road. Then he went back, and he was the big shit, so they promoted him to producer. So the recordings sound great. And it opened me up to all these other bands that were doing that.

I was just looking for the other, you know? Hearing too much American music and growing up on it and just hearing something that was like, "Whoever's making these records, I do not know them." When I hear a lot of records these days, it's like, "Yeah, it sounds like a lot of guys in the studio." I think that was a big attraction, as well as how good the players are-- and just the sounds and how they're just going for it. The way all these different influences are trickling in, and how they're bringing their own culture's influences into it, too. It has elements of things that you'd recognize, but then things that American bands would just never think to do.

I also got into R. Stevie Moore. This Jersey guy's been doing home recordings for about three decades or so. His stuff is just amazing and it's all over the place. It's just great songwriting. And it's home recorded, which is always a plus for me. Not necessarily lo-fi, but just home recorded-- you can just hear him recording it.

Golden Dawn - Power Plant (1967)

"Taking their name from the esoteric teachings and philosophy of the Hermetic Tradition, Golden Dawn hailed from Austin, Texas, forming in 1967. The group's primary musical influence, The 13th Floor Elevators, were instrumental in getting them their recording contract with International Artists. Indeed, George Kinney and Roky Erickson had grown up together in South Austin, attending the same school and playing together in The Fugitives, a garage band from the mid-60's.

"Power Plant" features fine, acid-spiked folk rock guitars and intelligent psychedelic-inspired lyrics. The emotional range is remarkable for a debut album - from the searing acid punk of Evolution, through the classic pop-inflected psych of My Time into the brooding introspection of Reaching Out To You. Indeed, this highly-regarded Texan-Psych classic is essential listening for any fan of The 13th Elevators. Sadly, International Artists failed to promote the album effectively on its release and the band eventually fell apart when Kinney decided he was having nothing more to do with the group and took off for California. The group's Bill Hallmark went on to sing and play guitar for The Rubayyat, in company with 13th Floor Elevators member Danny Galindo."-international artists

Says G. Lucas: “You should probably date me because I am created anew every second of the day. Also each night, I dream a new twisting labyrinth of fable that has a natural, psychic, satirical take on the day ahead, and I’ll tell you about it before my eyes open. Luck itself forms a strange glowing field around my body that you can almost see if the light is right, and I’m a cat whisperer. I basically dare you to date me.”

What G. Lucas wants: “I’m interested in someone who believes in and secretly plans for the imminent destruction of the world as we know it. Fire from the sky, great fissures in the pavement of the city choked with weeds, fighting with savage mutants over batteries and drinking water, the whole classic bit. But life goes on, and I really think we’ll have a great time spearing wild pigeons, collecting rain for drinking water and playing leather drums on abandoned rooftops.”

About G. Lucas’s music: “I do what’s called ‘tape manipulation’ if you’re being literal, or ‘weird shit’ if you’re watching me jam on the floor at a sweaty basement show. I record samples onto common cassette tapes and mix them by hand crossfader-style through effects, and into a found-sound wall of shifting texture. I know, I know, don’t tell your mom. I also play tapes and sing affected vocals in Woods and do a solo drone project called Nonhorse. It’s all very abstract and insectoid.”

G. Lucas’s top five favorite albums: Stevie Nicks’s Bella Donna, Captain Beefheart’s Trout Mask Replica, Love by Love, Can’s Ege Bamyasi and any Billie Holiday album

Thanks to everyone for coming out to the WOODSIST/CAPTURED TRACKS festival! I hope everyone had as much fun as we did. Between there being a BOOTLEG of some radio sessions we did in France and upstate New York, to fire works, to Fridays show being moved indoors, to soul food buffet, to seeing everyone i've ever met, to making new friends, to blahblahblah, it was all and all a really amazing time. I had to work during most of the day on Saturday so I wasn't able to take all the photos I would have liked too, and since the Friday show was moved inside where it was so dark - I didn't even bother. So you’re in Abe Vigoda, where does the name come from?
M: it’s the name of an actor
J: me and Michael thought it’d be funny to name a band that when we were in highschool and chatting on AIM and when we finally formed a band we named it Abe Vigoda because we couldn’t think of anything else and also, its kind of catchy, and I don’t know, its not a very good band name, but its funny.

So the band started in highschool, what year?
M: I was a sophomore
J: was it that early? Okay, so I was a junior.

So 15, 16 years old, and how old are you now?
J: im 22 years old
M: im 21.

So about a year ago you went on your first US tour, and I heard that was the first time any of you had been east of the Mississippi, how was that?
M: it was way more beautiful than I thought it was going to be, I had no idea the South was going to be so green and like “crazy jungle.” It was pretty mind blowing. Heard cicadas for the first time!
J: It was beautiful, a lot of cool new American experiences, and I got to meet a bunch of cool new people, and people I had talked to on the internet but never met, and people in bands and shit.

So being from LA, an epicenter of the world, were there any cities/towns in particular that really stuck out that you weren’t expecting?
J: Pensacola! It had a really nice beach and the show was really fun and everyone was really nice in a very specific way
M: Pensacola was wonderful. White sand!
J: so yeah Pensacola was a surprise, and on this last tour with No Age, Jackson, Mississippi, was a surprise
M: amazing!

So you liked the South?
J: yeah, I feel like people had said shows can be bad there, so you kind of expect that, BUT, it’s been really good.

So Pensacola, Jackson, anywhere else?
M: Ashville the first time we played there, we played outside in this courtyard and it was really crazy.
J: yeah it was really cool, we got to hang out with our friends band Ear Power which is our friend Devon and his girlfriend Sarah and they’re really great and they’re like…the nicest people…like SO NICE….but not like nice where you’re like ah they are so nice, but its like they’re fun and funny and just like…great.
M: and they say shit like….it’s a humor you’ve never even heard or thought about

Like what’s an example?
J: just like funny…
M: like Sarah, man, she was nuts!
J: it’s a combination of her accent and her demeanor in general is very like…
M: Like southern sass!
J: southern sass! Like she’s a total diva and she just like loves you, like, she loves me!

So how many records do you have out?
J: we have three full length records out, which is crazy. We have one that came out on LP and CDR which Dean who does PPM put out.
M: and Not Not Fun put it out too…
J: Then we put out a CD only record called Kid City like two years ago on Old Factory
M: which is Jims from the Smells label
J: and then now Skeleton, which is on PPM, and Bella Union in the UK and that’s our newest one, but a lot of people seem to think it’s our first one, which, in a way its our first one in a different way.. It’s the first one where we put it out and there was a lot of press about it.

Is it the first one you’ve released since moving from Chino to LA?
J: We recorded it before we moved, right?
M: No, during!
J: oh my god you’re right
M: yeah, totally during.
J: but we wrote the songs earlier that year and some really close to that time, I guess around winter last year is when we recorded it.

So did leaving chino and entering LA influence the record at all?
M: maybe a little, some lyrics.
J: but a lot of songs were written before
M: it kind of gave it focus a little bit more

So we’re in New York, you just played at Monster Island in Brooklyn, and you’re about to embark on…
J: a month long Canadian and US tour with telepathy and Diplo! And we don’t know them (Diplo) so that’ll be new, and we sort of know Telepathy which I think are very nice ladies. And were going on a TOUR BUS of all things, which is very weird and different and new, so it’s a new kind of tour which is exciting to say the least.
M: the tour bus will be strange

And after that?
J: after that were gunna go home for a little bit and hang out and then we’re gunna go to the UK for like 5 or 6 shows…

And this is your first time in Europe…
M: which is really crazy, the fact that playing music can take you to Europe…its nuts!

Are you excited about anything in particular?
J: London! And to meet the people at the label, and get to meet Simon Raymond who is the head of Bella Union, and to geek out on him
M: im excited to see Spain a lot
J: im excited to see our friend Borja from Spain
M: oh Borja!

Internet friend?
J: no real life friend actually! Met him in LA cause he was doing a thing for a magazine in Spain
M: he was just visiting LA and saw a show, and he came up to me after words and was like “your guitar! It sounds like you play with….
Both:”…WHAMMY!”
J:”…but I don’t see no whammy!” so he liked that.
(laughs)
M: and he had this friend named Aldo who got online and showed us some music video for his band and it’s of him sky diving and he said he sky dives constantly, really, like he said “I have over 1000 jumps!”.
J: this guy is awesome and just insane, and probably hella loaded.

That’s cool, I saw a sky diving video. It was of my friends boyfriends step dad, and we went over to his house on some Jewish holiday and he showed us a video of him sky diving to some Red Hot Chili peppers song.
J: WOAH WHICH SONG! ?

Some California song…
J: oh, (sings) “Californication…”

No, no, no, not that one…the one like “California rest in peace…”
M: oh Danny California!
J: oh I know which one!

So about California…after all this touring, what’s your favorite thing to do when you get home?
J: oh my favorite thing to do is go to my parents house! I love it I love it I love it so much
M: ooh that sounds good. Say hello to my friends, lay in my bad, just chill the fuck out
J: oh lay in my bed, I already want to do that!!
M: say hey to the lady at the liquor store next door, tell her about my travels a little bit
J: she’s the bomb. Yeah, people always ask “how was tour how was tour” and then I get really excited to tell them stories, and then get online and message all the people I met on tour
M: yeah and this time we get back before thanksgiving so I get to go say hi to the fam.
J: yeah im excited to be with my family and my bed and my books and my tv.
M: were gunna get so cozy
J: me and Michael are gunna sit by our fire place!

Anything exciting happening in LA right now?
J: im really excited about this restaurant called Galagetse, at 8th and Irolo. It’s Mexican food, like very specific, it’s a lot of mole, and a lot of cheese, and I go there a lot. Me and Jenna took Vampire Weekend there! It’s close to me and Michaels house.
M: (laughs) I don’t really know…im not excited…I cant think of anything right now!

Okay so what do you think before you play shows?
J: I get really tense before we play
M: during the shows I think of what the amps are sounding like since we usually borrow stuff, I think of the set list, I think of songs going into one another,
J: sometimes I think about banter, I like to talk too much sometimes, so sometimes I think about things I want to say, and sometimes im funny.
M: Morby do you find banter annoying?

I love banter, im a banterer.
J: I love it! I love when people do it! I love it. BUT, sometimes people can think im annoying, people have said that our banter is very annoying, sometimes maybe cause I say stupid things or I sound like im being condescending, but im just nervous.

And what do you think after a show?
J: afterwards im either like “oh that was so fun, or FUCK, that was really bad!”
M: I think “that was crazy” or im uncertain, like there’s a huge 15 minute uncertainty and then I find a friend and ask them how it sounded.
J: but 95 percent of the time I think our shows are very good even despite stupid things, and im usually feeling pretty positive, very little do I feel very shitty afterwards, sometimes I do – not gunna lie – and sometimes I have to be by myself a little bit afterwards so I don’t get upset

So what can we expect for the future of Abe Vigoda
J: well we’re going to get a new drummer, which is a sad thing
M: but on good terms…
J: yeah, so we have to figure that out, and then recording a new record.
M: we have a new EP coming out in January probably
J: oh yeah! In late January, and its called Reviver and its 5 songs,
M: it’s a little different than Skeleton…
J: we played almost all the songs from it tonight, and Michael covers a Stevie Nicks song and its really beautiful…

So favorite thing about being in New York?

J: DUDE! eating so much pizza, so much snacks, walking so much!
M: yesterday we just wandered all day
J: I loved it! Just like did regular stuff, like I needed to buy this thing, and then I bought it, like I live in New York, like oh man I gotta go to Best Buy…
M: constant stimulus, just like a feast for the eyes, the city…its crazy, there’s so many people that come out to shows,
J: yeah it seems like there’s more of that going on out here than in LA to be honest

Okay, so to wrap it up, any shout outs you want to give?

J: My Mom, Ziggy my dog at my parents house, Robert who we’re going to see in Seattle
M: Robert M. Walsh.
J: yeah we have a song about him called live long which is named after his tattoo and that’s on Skeleton, and we’re going to have t-shirts made in the UK with his face, and a 7” with his face..
M: it’s going to be like a classic Smiths style t-shirt with the font, and then a sad boy looking down…
J: so yeah, shout to him cause I love him and miss him
M: yeah great guy, who else do we shout out?

Oh! Any bands you’ve seen on tour that stuck out?

J: TV Ghost from Indiana!
J: Beets, I like the Beets! And last time we were here we played Fiasco, and I thought they were cool.

Kevin and Jeremy had to miss the Love is All set due to Piereced Arrows (ex-Dead Moon) playing the Mercury Lounge in Manhattan. So after the Woods set they bolted over to the Big Apple and caught them just in time (and for free!?). Fred and Toody showed NYC they still knew how to rock, even with their new bummer-drummer. They got back just in time to catch Abe Vigodas last two songs...

Here are some photos from our shows at SUNY Purchase and Bard a few weeks ago with TV Ghost and Pink Reason.

SUNY Purchase's student center looks like a european squat(only with a starbucks across the street). Skate ramps, kicker/foosball, drinking, free video games, shit all over the place. Totally awesome. The 8 people who showed seemed like they were having fun.

Moon Men On The Moon,Man

Andy(Cake Shop's Owner) and other CS employees tore through some Ramones and Wipers tunes. The set's only flaw was it's brevity. I was upstairs and totally missed the Ramones songs.

Every now then I have anxiety dreams where I'm playing a show and everyone in the band has forgotten the songs, my guitar is turning into glue, I forgot to wear a shirt and I look like an asshole. You get the picture. Well, last night's meneguar set was the closest I've ever felt to that while awake. A brand new bass cable stopped working during the first song, the snare broke on the second, water spilt on my guitar pedals. While I don't have any pictures from that trainwreck, check this out.

After getting 5 hours of sleep on a hardwood floor we slept walked over to Ms. Beas for Woods 1 pm set. Ouch! We had the rest of the day off(and since we turned down the badges that get you into all the showcases for free and took the cash) we spent the rest of the day hanging out at Ms. Beas. Todd P has been putting on all day, all ages, free to the public shows there for the past 3 years during sxsw. Most bands we wanted to see and/or hang out with play it at some point, so we just set up camp.

Ponytail is one of the best rock bands out there hands down. I haven't checked out their recorded stuff yet, but both shows I've caught have been intense.

Sunburned Hand w/Bill Nace.

This sunburned set killed! totally demented and it exploded into a brief kraut finale. Check out their new fire escape record. It feature a huge cast of old and new sunburned players, plus some vibracatherdral folks. Produced by Four Tet. It's damn good.

The Meneguar show was totally last minute and so much fun. Thanks to John and Todd for having us. As soon as we were done we ran over to the Mohawk to catch Tyvek.

Soiled Mattress and the Springs

We got to the Cake Shop showcase and saw a minute of Soiled mattress.

I'd caught Tyvek a few times in NYC/Brooklyn, but this set really did it for me. I totally fell in love with the summer burns 7 inch and it felt good to be at a show just as a straight up fan of the band.

Lemon Dando

Flying high from the Meneguar set and the Tyvek show(and 4 days of 10 hour drives) we pulled the van up to Emos to unload and heard "It's a shame about ray" in the distance. Evan dando was playing the whole It's a Shame record at the outdoor stage across the street. I guess I blocked it out of my memory, but I quickly realized that this was a record I listened to repeatedly in high school. I apparently know all the words?! Anyway, totally fun/random way to end the night.

Bill's an old friend, but I've somehow never seen him solo(?!). One man, one guitar and a few dozen pieces of metal. Excellent. Picked up Bill's new tape, as well as a CD version of the Dan Higgs cassette that Bill put out last year. Haven't spun the CD yet, but I've listened to the cassette enough to wholeheartedly recommend it. It's my favorite Higgs solo release. Both on Bill's Open Mouth label.
